Which Do You Have?
Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. ~ Peter Drucker
Leadership skills will take you places. I truly believe that very few people want to be “managed.” Because if you can be “managed”, you can also be “mismanaged.” Whoever heard of “mis-leadered?” My point exactly.
Leadership doesn’t always have to mean leading from the front. If you can get someone to do something that they embrace as their idea, they will do it sooner, better and happier. Why? Because they’ve taken ownership of it. Not only that; there’s excitement around the opportunity to bring something to fruition. And when it works out, there’s bragging rights. Oh, and the great feeling of accomplishment.
Leadership is a quality needed when going out on your own. Whether you are taking a solo trip around the world in a small airplane, or just starting out in a new business, you need to know how to lead; first yourself and then others. Good leadership follows the adage of “Work smarter, not harder.” If you have the vision, discipline and focus to lead yourself to be successful, imagine what you can do when leading others!
Leadership also entails communicating your vision and making sure you get the right results. Management is communicating someone else’s vision and managing the process. Because it’s your vision, you can describe it in powerful words so others can see it in their minds and follow it exactly.
Before you make a leap into Leadership, make sure you have the right skills – Are you a good planner, organizer and coordinator? Or are your skills in the vision and motivation category? Take this quick quiz to see where you excel and what you need to work on.
